Background

The Women’s & Children’s Hospital (WCH) Foundation is the principal charity for the Women’s & Children’s Hospital in South Australia. The WCH Foundation exists to raise money and invest in initiatives that support the care and future health of South Australia’s women and children.

An estimated 1,500 Australian & British Prisoners of War were forced to walk the rugged 260 kilometre jungle track from Sandakan to Ranau in Bornero during World War II in what is referred to as the Death March.

The WCH Foundation is coordinating a unique experience to retrace the footsteps of our Australian WWII Servicemen on the “Sandakan Track” Borneo as part of 2011 Anzac Day commemorations.

This once in a lifetime experience is part of a 12 day trek being held from April 23 – 5 May 2011, with funds raised going towards helping sick kids at the Women’s & Children’s Hospital through the funding of several new ‘pain distraction therapy rooms’.

The rooms are brightly decorated treatment rooms which work by distracting children from the pain and anxiety that comes with being seriously ill or injured. By listening to music, playing games or watching a DVD they have something else to focus on so they are less likely to feel frightened or develop a fear of future treatments.

Natalie Bottroff has registered to participate in the 2011 Anzac Day March and has commenced fund raising in support of this initiative. Funding for the travel to/from Borneo and the associated land content will be borne by Natalie hence all funds raised will go directly to the WCH Foundation.
